VEGETABLE GARDENING & EDIBLE LANDSCAPING WORKSHOP Whether you want a few tomatoes on your patio or want to grow enough of your own food to freeze or can, this class is for you. Roger Reynolds will cover the basics and a lot more. Most people mulch their perennial flower gardens to reduce weeds, hold in moisture, and feed the soil. Mulch will do the same thing in your vegetable garden and your patio tomato pots. Plus learn how to work vegetables into your flower gardens and have them look fantastic, or go even further and add a few flowers to your vegetable garden and design it to look beautiful — beyond just function. "Think outside the ROW!" Sunday, May 25, 1:00 to 3:00 pm Cost $6 COMPOSTING & LASAGNA GARDENING: A HANDS-ON WORKSHOP Composting is one of the best ways to recycle, and it gives you a fantastic product when it works. When it does not work, you can have dried plant material for years or a stinking wet mess for the summer. Roger Reynolds will teach you the basics of good, clean composting — in terms anyone can understand. Then we will take our composting knowledge right to the garden and learn how to create a "lasagna garden" — a deep-mulched garden system that takes no digging, no tilling, and has almost no weeds. It can be used to smother invasive species 100%, with no chemicals, and you can plant right over the bad guys as they die — buried. Weather permitting, we will build a lasagna garden at Blooming Valley for a hands-on experience. Sunday, June 8, 1:00 to 4:00 pm Cost $8 BUTTERLY & HUMMINGBIRD GARDENS: A HANDS-ON PLANTING WORKSHOP Do you want to attract more butterflies and hummingbirds to your garden? Ina Lukas will teach you which plants attract these beautiful creatures to your yard and which specific plants are essential for the stages of their life cycles. Then we will all plant a butterfly garden on-site, with Ina showing you the tricks of how to prep, design, lay out, and plant the garden. Sunday, June 29, 1:00 to 4:00 pm Cost $8 GARDENING 101: WHERE DO I BEGIN? Are you new to gardening and feeling a little bit overwhelmed? Ina Lukas will teach you the basics of how to create beautiful home gardens, including building your soil, creating beds, choosing plants, mulching, watering, garden maintenance, tools, and much more. Our goal is to help you avoid the common mistakes of beginning gardeners, while boosting your gardening confidence. Saturday, July 5, 1:00 to 3:30 pm Cost $8 LOW-MAINTENANCE GARDEN DESIGN FROM THE GROUND UP: A HANDS-ON WORKSHOP Do you want to plant a new flower bed that is not only beautiful, but is easy to maintain? Learn the secrets of how to do it right from the start. Ina Lukas will show you how to prep the site, build your soil, choose the plants, design, and lay out from scratch. Prepare to get dirty, as we will create an instant garden so you can see for yourself how simple it truly is. Sunday, July 20, 1:00 to 4:30 pm Cost $10 ENERGY-EFFICIENT LANDSCAPING: MAKE YOUR LANDSCAPE — GREEN! As you plan your home landscape, you can also affect your heating and cooling costs and not compromise beauty. Do flowerbeds or vegetable gardens take more or less work and money than lawn care? Roger Reynolds will teach you how proper placement of trees, arbors, trellises, and tall annuals can significantly reduce your summer cooling costs. Windbreaks, unheated greenhouses, and a few more tricks can help reduce your winter heating costs, plus give you fresh winter vegetables. Sunday, August 3, 1:00 to 3:00 pm Cost $6 CREATING A FULL SEASON OF NATURAL BEAUTY: THE NEW WAVE PLANTING MOVEMENT There is a garden design revolution sweeping the land, and it's called The New Wave. The brilliant influence of Piet Oudolf, a visionary garden designer from Holland, has created a whole new way of designing with perennials. By looking to nature's native landscapes and adding artistic skill, we can make beautiful, low-maintenance gardens that generate interest from spring through fall, and all winter too. Ina Lukas will show you how to use these design influences to create stunning naturescapes in your yard. Learn about the plants that create interest all season long through their form, foliage, flowers, and seedheads. If you're ready to be inspired, don’t miss this class! Saturday, August 17, 1:00 to 3:00 pm Cost $6 THE EXCITING WORLD OF ORNAMENTAL GRASSES Want to know more about this growing trend in garden plants? Learn why ornamental grasses are so wonderful to use and how they add texture, movement, sound, winter interest, and the manipulation of light to your garden, while being absolutely low-maintenance. See mature plants blooming in our display gardens. Ina Lukas will introduce you to the different kinds of ornamental grasses that are hardy in Wisconsin and teach you how to use them in garden design. Sunday, September 7, 1:00 to 3:00 pm Cost $6
